    Friday Goes to the Stampede

    Friday Goes to the Stampede

When you’re a small business who likes to have a root tooten good time in a city like Calgary, there’s only one place to go; The Calgary Staaaaampede (Yeehaw).

In case you haven't seen the flags on every street pole in the city - The Calgary Stampede is happening July 5 -14 2019. It is full of adventure and unlike anything else you can experience at other times of the year. There is much to do that we thought it would be helpful to feature some of Friday’s faves.

    FOR THE KIDS:

Milk & Cookies Shack (Presented by Alberta Milk)

This year at the Calgary Stampede organizers have introduced the Milk & Cookies Shack! Being parents here at Friday we know that sometimes (and when we say sometimes mean all-the-time), kids would appreciate a small refreshment of this classic combo.

Little known fact - when eating Milk and Cookies, the flavour experience is actually doubled - er... quadrupled when actually wearing milk and cookie socks. Don’t believe us? Well you’re wrong. Cause it’s a fact.

The Milk & Cookies Shack can be found outside the agriculture building near the entry to country trail - check the official website for opening hours!

Animals, Agriculture and Community Spirit (Presented by Nutrien)

After the little ones are all fuelled up - we recommend heading over to the Nutrien Western Event Center & Altalink Hall for the ‘Seed Survivor’ exhibit.

As a sustainable company ourselves, we appreciate the opportunity for kids to hang with experts and learn where their food comes from, get their cowboy-ness spirit on, dress the part (in their new cowboy socks of course) and be entertained - no matter what the age or ability of your children.

And side note - if a sock gets dirty in there (spoiler alert - it will), switch it up with the extra one that comes with every kids ‘pair’.

    FOR THE ADULTS:

    Food:

We couldn't very well write and article about the Calgary Stampede without a special shout-out to must have-food-goodness - right? Here are some of this years highlights.

    Cinnamon Bun Mini Doughnuts

Introducing...Cinnamon Bun Mini Doughnut...Socks! Juuuust kidding. We don’t have Cinnamon Bun Mini Doughnut socks. But as long time Calgary residents and people who eat treats - we have to recommend this new twist on our absolute fave Stampede snack. Available at the Midway!

So, no actual Cinnamon Bun Mini Doughnut socks BUT - never fear we do have regular doughnuts, pizza, beer, burger & fries and hot dog socks (plus plenty more) food themed socks to match the food festivities at the Calgary Stampede.

    Activities:

    Barrel Racing

Barrel racing is fast-paced, super competitive and amazing to watch, so we think it is worth a trip over to the Grandstand to see. It is impossible to not get in the spirit of the Stampede while there (as long as you have your Friday Sock Co socks on) and cheer on your favorite rider and horse.

    Find people with cool socks

Although not an ‘official’ activity of the Calgary Stampede, we suggest finding, gawking and high-fiving everyone else that you see wearing cool Friday Sock Co Socks. And don’t forget to tag us on social media (@fridaySockCo)! We want to see these socks (and you, of course) enjoying the always amazing Calgary Stampede.

    Hope to see you there!
    Team Friday

Disclaimer: When we say 'fact', we don't mean fact.

    Let's Avocuddle!

    Let's Avocuddle!

One of the funnest things we get to do at Friday Sock Co is collaborate with rad business owners to create one-of-a-kind mismatched socks. If you have ever seen our AvoCuddle socks - this was the result of one such special partnership.

Queenie Best - (Shop owner of Queenie's Cards in Toronto, ON) is the original creator of the uber-well-known design, the ‘Avo Cuddle’. We bet you have seen it on products such as cards, pillows, shirts etc, but never socks...until now.

We chatted with Queenie to get some behind-the-scenes information about the famous design that now lives on Friday Socks.

    Here we go…

Queenie - you are behind the design for the Avocuddle. Can you tell us how you came up with it?

I was making guacamole in the kitchen and it just came to me!

You have this design within your brand and on a lot of other products - what made you think of having it on socks?

I love working with Adam and I love Friday Sock Co! I first ordered for my retail shop back in the spring of 2017 and they always do so well, I thought having my design on socks would be the perfect fit - ha!

You could have had your design on matching socks - what made you want to work with Friday Sock Co and have them mismatched?

I actually adore mismatched socks! In high school I thought wearing different socks was the coolest thing and I still switch up my coloured socks to this day just because it's fun. Now I get to wear my own designs!

Have you had any feedback from customers that have bought your 'Let's Avocuddle' socks that you can share with us?

Absolutely! Everyone loves them! We love hearing the giggles and seeing the smiles when the socks catches customers' eyes. They're great for gifts and a treat for yourself. I'm already thinking about the next design to make!

As you can see - Queenie really does put her heart and quest for fun into everything she does, which makes her the perfect person for Friday Sock Co to Avocuddle with. If you would like to see more of the brilliant creations from Queenie visit her website HERE or shop for your very own pair of socks HERE.

    Love is Love

    Love is Love

Have you ever seen our ‘Love is Love’ socks? If you haven’t - there is more to it than a mismatched pattern and fun colours. Beyond the design, this sock was created with the intent to support the LGBTQ community.

We started our research into finding an organization who was doing to real-deal work and happily found the Rainbow Railroad. By working with the *Canadian Government, and front-line supporters around the world - Rainbow Railroad is using legal means to “help facilitate the safe passage of persecuted individuals” to flee from often, life or death situations. It is crazy to think that people are being marginalized (and even punished…) for loving who they love. We had to help.

In 2018, Rainbow Railroad received over 1300 requests for help with that number expected to more than double in 2019. Living in Canada - we are lucky. Being able to run a business that can also give back - lucky. We’ve made our donation already this year from a portion of the sales of our Love is Love socks. So...love you who want to love. Friday Sock Co supports you.

If you would like to hear more about the work that Rainbow Railroad is doing - visit their website HERE

*Rainbow Railroad is not funded by the Canadian Government

    Goodbye Plastic

    Goodbye Plastic

As this year began, Friday Sock Co made it a priority to expand on its mission to be as Earth Friendly as possible. We were already green - but we wanted to even greener.

Our socks are ethically made with continual shifts to reduce waste while considering our carbon footprint.

We did some research on where to focus our efforts, and we found that the plastic hooks we use has such a negative impact on our planet (land, air & water) and our animal/marine friends. We had to do something to help.

According to statistics from GreenPeace, “the equivalent of a truckload of plastic enters the oceans every minute”. Not good. This is affecting our climate, our economy, our food; everything. One hundred percent of plastic created still exists (marineinsight.com) and yes we can recycle it, but it isn’t biodegrading so…what do we do?

One thing we knew we could do would be to eliminate the plastic hangers off of our sock packages completely, and replace them with 100% recyclable cardboard tags.

Does it increase our cost? Yes. Does it cost more for you? No.

    Why?

Because we feel like it’s our responsibility to take care of the earth without increasing our pricing.

At the heart of Friday Sock Co, we believe that business can have a positive impact on our world. And it is worth it for us to invest in these initiatives.

What does this mean for you?

You will see our new tags being rolled out in the next few months.

The actual socks will remain the same. They will still be made with OEKO-TEX® cotton (high-quality standard), still be totally unique and mismatched, they’ll just be a bit greener.

Friday Sock Co X Beakerhead: Art and Science Collide

Friday Sock Co X Beakerhead: Art and Science Collide

One of the most rewarding things about what we do is getting the opportunity to work with creative organizations that are making a large and positive impact within the community.

And let’s be honest, large is by far an understatement for Beakerhead! We can definitely all agree that this artistic and scientific marvel certainly knows how to make an entrance.

For those who don’t know, this is a 5-day event that erupts throughout the city of Calgary, combining technical creativity with the futuristic visionaries of science and engineering in the form of interactive exhibits, larger than life installations and pure ingenuity. Confused yet? Well, there is really no easy or logical way to explain it, you just have to experience it in person to truly take in every aspect of the exhibition.

The best part of this year’s festivities is how they have incorporated Calgary’s culinary scene into the mix. From creating magical malt milkshakes to engineered eats to cooking in the Arctic to looking at coffee in parts per million, there’s really no limitations to the genius you’ll experience (and taste). You also can’t miss out on the Beakerbar at Fort Calgary. Here you can sip on delicious cold brews and chemical cocktails as the Serpent Mother lurks nearby – no we aren’t kidding!

If you haven’t had a chance to experience the spectacular frenzy, you still have time! We recommend hitting up the real-life version of Snakes and Ladders that will take you to 14 of the must-see exhibits, while experiencing some of the other Beakerhead magic along the way. However, as you can imagine this is not a typical board game and will rely on your skilled ability to listen to your hunches and master your timing (hint hint)! View the map to get started here.

Naturally, as you can imagine when Beakerhead approached us to collaborate on a pair of mismatched socks, there was no way we were saying no! Not only do they put on an unreal event, but they place a heavy emphasis on cultivating inner creativity and present year-round opportunities to be engaged with the public in science, engineering, and art, while stimulating ingenuity. As a result, the fit for this partnership could not have been more perfect!

We had already begun the process of designing a pair of spaceship themed socks a few months prior to having our first meeting with the Beakerhead team. So, when we sat down for our brainstorming session we landed on the idea to utilize the spaceships and pair them with a robot to compliment both brands while celebrating innovation, creativity, and technology. We then added a capital B on the chest of the robots to make the design unique to Beakerhead, with an added Friday flair.

Since we have attended many of the previous Beakerhead events and have a huge respect for the unreal work that their team is able to pull off, we were incredibly honoured to work on this collaboration with them. Talk about a creative dream!

These socks are available in both Mid-Calf (Men’s 7-12 and Women’s 8-13) and Crew (Women’s 5-10 and Men’s 4-8). Be sure to get them while you can, as they are a limited edition design and will only be available until supplies last!

Have fun exploring the quirky, scientific, citywide street festival this weekend. Here is a list of all of the fun interactive events and spectacular exhibitions to check out before the festival is over!
