Football season is officially here... aka the time of year when Sundays are booked solid, nachos count as dinner, and superstitions run wild (we heard wearing your Friday Sock Co. football socks does bring good luck….). But depending on which game you’re watching, the rules of football might look a little different.
That’s because here in Canada, we don’t just tune into the NFL, we’ve also got the CFL (for all you Americans that’s the Canadian Football League), with its own quicks, pace, and die-hard fans. (We’re talking about you Rider Fans…)
If you’ve ever found yourself yelling “Wait, why is the field so big??” Don't worry, you're not alone.
We’ve created a cheat sheet to CFL vs. NFL so you can sound like the smartest fan at the tailgate.
A Quick History Lesson in North American Football
Canadian football actually predates the CFL by almost a century, the first recorded game was in 1861 at the University of Toronto. By 1958, the CFL was officially formed, and Canadian fans had their own league to cheer for.
Meanwhile, south of the border, the NFL was born in 1920 and grew into the powerhouse it is today. Both games evolved from rugby, but like long-lost cousins, they developed a few… personality differences.
-
The Field: Size Matters
CFL: 110 yards long, 65 yards wide, 20-yard end zones.
NFL: 100 yards long, 53 yards wide, 10-yard end zones.
CFL fans will tell you: bigger field = bigger plays. NFL fans will tell you: smaller field = tighter strategy.
We’ll just say… both are fun to watch with a plate of wings.
-
Number of Players: More Friends on the Field
CFL: 12 players per side. (13 if you’re at a riders game)
NFL: 11 players per side.
That extra Canadian player often means more motion, more passing, and more chaos… in the best way.
-
Downs: Hurry It Up
CFL: 3 downs to move 10 yards.
NFL: 4 downs to do the same.
Translation: the CFL game moves fast, like trying to beat the line at halftime. The NFL has more patience, grinding out plays and clock management.
-
The Ball: A Subtle Difference
CFL: Slightly longer and slimmer.
NFL: A little shorter and rounder.
-
Timing Rules: No Time to Waste
CFL: 20 seconds to snap the ball.
NFL: 40 seconds on the play clock.
That shorter Canadian clock keeps the game zippy. Blink and you might miss it.
-
Motion Before the Snap: Organized Chaos
CFL: Each team starts at the opponent’s 35. Two rounds, then it’s a draw.
NFL: Complex sudden-death rules, depending on who scores first.
Both keep fans biting their nails (and refilling their chip bowls.)
Which Game is Better?
Asking whether the CFL or NFL is better is like asking if nachos are better than wings… you can argue all day, but the only correct answer is: “both, please!”
CFL: Faster, pass-happy, unpredictable.
NFL: Strategic, powerhouse, polished.
Canadian fans are lucky as we get double the football, double the excuses to wear stretchy pants on Sundays.
